About C. J. Hellwig

Hello! My name is C.J. Hellwig and I’m a high school and college tutor. I designed this website so you could get a better sense of the science and math tutoring services I provide. I’ve been working full time as a science and math tutor in New York City, Queens, and Brooklyn for over 9 years, and in that time I’ve worked with a wide range of students. I’ve learned what works best with different learning styles and I’m always willing to take the time to do a good job.

I received my bachelor’s degree from George Washington University, with a major in English and minors in Math and Philosophy. I worked as a web programmer for a couple years after college, but I found the work to be tedious. After moving to New York, I started tutoring college chemistry, and found that I really enjoyed teaching. I also seem to have a knack for explaining difficult concepts in a way that’s easy to understand. The one-on-one, personal nature of private tutoring keeps things interesting, and I’m always happy to teach someone, as long as they’re willing to learn.

I know how unpleasant and stressful it can be to study for a test in a subject you find difficult or unfamiliar. I always try to present material and guide students through problems slowly enough that they’re not overwhelmed. I’m familiar with the texts and professors at many colleges in New York City, like NYU, Columbia, and Hunter, and I will do my best to structure the tutoring sessions around the class requirements. I’m also familiar with standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, and GMAT, and if you are studying for one of these tests, I will organize our sessions taking into account your prior knowledge, learning style, and time constraints.

I travel to most locations in Manhattan and Queens. I’ll also go to Brooklyn, or to other further locations, but an additional traveling fee may apply. We can meet at your home, dormitory, coffee shop or other public places. I also offer referral bonuses.

If you are willing to put in the work, tutoring can make a big difference in test scores and mastering course materials. It’s important that you feel comfortable with whoever you choose for your science or math tutor. You can fill out the contact form, send me an email at cj@nyctutor.net or give me a call at 718-753-7060.
